A Villanelle. C. J. Black.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

The pen has gone and got my voice

A writer rose from the dead

To write, do I really have much choice?

I feel honoured to have been handed this chalice

Someone at some point planted a seed

The pen has gone and got my voice

I have nerves of steel; I can be cool as ice

I firmly believe this, I do indeed

To write, do I really have much choice?

When I complete a poem I silently rejoice

Then onto the next project I proceed

The pen has gone and got my voice

I realise I’ll never be a James Joyce

I simply write because I feel the need

To write, do I really have much choice?

I try hard to encourage and entice

Persevere, and like me you will succeed

The pen has gone and got my voice

To write, do I really have much choice?
